The Hai Duong Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine took 16 blood samples from pigs raised by 3 households in Cam Hoang Commune (Cam Giang) to test the level of protective antibodies after vaccination. The results showed that 100% of the samples had African swine fever antibodies with a rate of 66.98 - 97.99%, ensuring immunity (an antibody rate below 40% does not ensure immunity). This will be the basis for Hai Duong to consider and evaluate large-scale vaccination against African swine fever in the coming time.
Previously, in early July, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine coordinated with the Agricultural Service Center of Cam Giang district to vaccinate pigs against African swine fever in 3 small-scale farms. The pigs were healthy, developed normally and no abnormalities related to the vaccine were detected since vaccination. After 28 days of vaccination, the unit took blood samples to send for testing at the Central Veterinary Diagnosis Center.
The vaccine used is from AVAC Vietnam Joint Stock Company. This vaccine is used for pigs from 4 weeks of age and older, injected in a single dose, the drug has a protection period of at least 5 months.
In the coming time, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine will continue to implement the evaluation of African swine fever vaccine injection for the pig herd. At the same time, closely monitor and supervise the pig herd after vaccination, take samples to test the protective antibody content after vaccination.
In 2022, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development had to request a stop to African swine fever vaccination in 31 provinces and cities (where there are large pig herds) because pigs died after being injected with this vaccine.
However, in the face of the complicated epidemic situation, on July 24, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development sent a document to the People's Committees of provinces and centrally run cities on the use of vaccines to prevent African swine fever. Accordingly, the People's Committees of provinces and centrally run cities, based on the epidemic situation, direct specialized agencies to advise on the use of vaccines in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions to prevent and control epidemics in the locality; organize sample collection for monitoring and evaluation after vaccination. Localities report the results of vaccine use (if any), as well as promptly report difficulties and problems to the ministry for coordination and handling.
