North Korea fires missiles from east coast, South Korea's acting president speaks out

Today (January 14), the South Korean military announced that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea launched a series of short-range missiles, after which South Korean acting President Choi Sang-mok declared that Seoul would respond to Pyongyang's actions.

South Korean TV broadcasts news of a North Korean missile test

South Korea's military said it had recorded a series of short-range ballistic missiles launched by North Korea into the East Sea on January 14, according to Reuters.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) detected the missile launch at around 9:30 a.m. (local time), originating from the Ganggye area in the North's Jagang Province.

The missiles traveled 250 km before falling into the sea.

The JCS affirmed that it maintains high vigilance and readiness for developments in North Korea, and continues to share information on similar launches with the US and Japan.

Acting South Korean President Choi Sang-mok said the Seoul government would respond firmly to what he considered "provocations" from Pyongyang and asserted that the missile test violated United Nations Security Council resolutions.

The launch came a day after Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya met senior South Korean officials in Seoul in an effort to strengthen bilateral ties before US President-elect Donald Trump returns to the White House.

The January 14 event marked North Korea’s second missile test this year. On January 6, Pyongyang said it had launched a medium-range hypersonic ballistic missile.

AFP quoted experts as saying that North Korea's latest missile test could be a message to the incoming administration of Donald Trump.

"The launch could be aimed at the US, with the intention of increasing pressure ahead of Donald Trump's second term," said Yang Moo-jin, president of the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul.
