The US is banning imports of Xinjiang cotton

The South China Morning Post reported on September 24 that Chinese authorities have launched an investigation into PVH Group, the parent company of Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, on suspicion of "discriminatory" practices against cotton products from the Xinjiang region.

In a move that could escalate US-China trade tensions, China's Ministry of Commerce announced that it had launched the investigation under the framework of a "blacklist", a list of companies that could be banned from trading with China.

Within 30 days, US companies must provide records and evidence documenting any discriminatory measures they have used against Xinjiang products in the past three years, according to China's Ministry of Commerce.

In addition, the country's Ministry of Commerce also issued another notice stating that PVH was suspected of "unfairly boycotting" Xinjiang cotton and other products from the region without any basis in fact.

Under the Trump administration, the US has imposed a ban on all cotton imports from Xinjiang, accusing the region of using forced labor from the Uighur minority.

The ban has lasted for three years and shows no signs of stopping.
