Three of them suffered serious injuries to their backs and legs, local media reported.
The incident occurred at around 8:20 a.m. Thursday local time at Sunae Station on the Bundang Line, south of Seoul.
Commuters were walking up the escalator when it suddenly changed direction and moved down.

A video circulating on Twitter shows people falling down the stairs, on top of each other. One person is seen falling down an adjacent escalator.
South Korean authorities are investigating the exact cause of the incident.
