World oil prices

At 6:00 a.m. on December 18, Brent crude fell 72 cents, or 1%, to $73.19 a barrel. WTI crude fell 63 cents, or 0.9%, to $70.08 a barrel.

Oil prices continued to decline on demand concerns after negative economic news from Germany and China, while investors remained cautious ahead of the US Federal Reserve's decision on interest rates.

In China, the world's second-largest economy, industrial output growth picked up slightly in November, while retail sales came in much weaker than expected.

This suggests Beijing needs to ramp up its consumer-focused stimulus package as policymakers prepare for higher US trade tariffs after President-elect Donald Trump takes office.

Investors are now watching forecasts from US policymakers for signs of whether the Fed will be more cautious in 2025, as economic indicators show persistent inflation.
