VnExpressVnExpress20/09/2023

Crown Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko paid an official visit to Vietnam on the occasion of the two countries celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the visit will take place from September 20-25, at the invitation of the Vietnamese government. This is the first official foreign visit of the Crown Prince and Princess after the Covid-19 pandemic, and also the first visit to Vietnam by a member of the Japanese royal family in 6 years, taking place on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-Japan diplomatic relations (September 21, 1973 - September 21, 2023).

Mr. Akishino was the first member of the Japanese royal family to visit Vietnam, having visited Vietnam twice in 1999 and 2021.

Vietnam - Japan relations have high political trust, increasingly close regional ties, and share common views on many regional and international cooperation issues.

Japan continues to be Vietnam's leading economic partner, ranking first in ODA provision, second in labor cooperation, third in investment and tourism, and fourth in trade. Bilateral trade turnover in 2022 reached nearly 50 billion USD, of which Vietnam exported 24.2 billion USD to Japan and imported 23.4 billion USD.

Japan is the partner that has signed the most bilateral and multilateral free trade agreements with Vietnam, including the ASEAN-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (AJCEP), the Vietnam-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (VJEPA), the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (RCEP).
