Discouraging the use of whales to attract tourists in Nha Trang

With whales appearing repeatedly in the sea area near Hon Mun Island, the Nha Trang Bay Management Board (Khanh Hoa) has issued a protection notice, emphasizing not to use this rare animal to attract tourists.

On August 8, the Nha Trang Bay Management Board (BQL) said that whales continued to appear in the sea area near Hon Mun Island, Nha Trang Ward (Vinh Nguyen Ward, old Nha Trang City), after the first recording on July 22.

Mr. Tran Van Phu, Head of Nha Trang Tourist Wharf (under Nha Trang Bay Management Board), informed: "On the morning of August 7, a large whale suddenly appeared and hunted in the sea area near Hon Mun Island. The fact that whales continuously appeared and hunted in Nha Trang Bay is not only a strange thing but also a good sign showing that the marine environment is reviving."

Through observation of morphology and behavior, it was initially determined that this was a Bryde's whale - a large, rare marine animal with special ecological value. Bryde's whale is a species protected under Decree No. 06/2019 of the Government and the CITES Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Animals.

Previously, on July 29, to protect rare marine animals, Nha Trang Bay Management Board issued a notice requiring organizations and individuals operating in the area to keep a minimum distance of 100 meters from whales. This is a safe distance so as not to disturb the natural activities of this species.

Speaking to Thanh Nien reporters, Mr. Dam Hai Van, Director of Nha Trang Bay Management Board, emphasized: "Vehicles are not allowed to chase, block or intentionally steer into the middle of a school of fish. We do not encourage the use of whales to attract tourists because it will be counterproductive in preserving the habitat of this rare animal species."

According to regulations, inland waterway vehicles serving tourism are not allowed to gather in large numbers around whale areas, must reduce speed, limit noise and turn off the engine when stopping to observe. The use of drones at low altitudes is also strictly prohibited due to the loud noise they cause.

It is worth noting that Bryde's whales use low-frequency sound waves to navigate and communicate, so noise from engines, aircraft, or loudspeakers can disrupt their biological functions and behavior.

Mr. Van added that, as the management unit, Nha Trang Bay Management Board will propagate so that tourists and vehicles do not affect whales and avoid dangerous collisions.

According to Nha Trang Bay Management Board, it has not yet been determined whether this is the same whale in all three appearances or different individuals.

Experts say the appearance of whales in Nha Trang Bay is a positive sign of conservation efforts. This is evidence that the quality of seawater and food sources here have improved significantly, creating favorable conditions for large marine animals to return to their natural habitat.

Previously in May 2025, Nha Trang Bay also witnessed the appearance of hundreds of dolphins , creating a series of consecutive positive phenomena.

Hon Mun is part of the strictly protected area of Nha Trang Bay Marine Protected Area, an area with a rich coral ecosystem and high biodiversity. The fact that whales choose this area to hunt shows that the quality of the water environment, as well as the marine ecosystem, is being positively improved.
