Ho Chi Minh City: A 36-year-old male tour guide suffered multiple injuries, including a severed elbow, after a boat carrying 42 foreign tourists collided with a ferry on the Tien River.

On April 20, Dr. Le Dinh Hai, Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Cho Ray Hospital, said that the patient was admitted to the hospital early that morning with a very fast pulse and unmeasurable blood pressure. Doctors from many specialties consulted and determined that the patient had traumatic shock, ruptured organs, and a crushed right elbow. The tour guide also had many broken bones in places such as the femur on both sides, the right patella, the left leg, the left ankle...

The treatment team resuscitated, intubated and placed on a ventilator, and transferred to emergency surgery. The patient's abdomen contained a lot of feces, crushed and perforated rectum, serosa, and duodenum, which were sutured by the gastroenterologist. In addition, the orthopedic trauma team performed debridement and reconstruction of the stump of the right arm, debridement of the thigh and lower leg, and splinting of the broken bone.

"The patient is on a ventilator after surgery and receiving intensive care, but unfortunately the team could not save the arm," the doctor said.

This is the most serious injury case when a boat carrying 42 foreign tourists from Phnom Penh, Cambodia to Chau Doc, crossing the Tien River in Tan Chau town, An Giang , collided with a ferry on the afternoon of April 19. The accident also caused German and French tourists (57 and 67 years old) to break their legs and were treated at FV Hospital.

The ship owner said the vehicle was hit while trying to cross the ferry at a section of the Tien River where many sand barges obstructed visibility. The company is cooperating with the investigating agency to clarify the cause of the accident. Authorities determined that both the ship captain and the ferry driver had no alcohol or drug levels.
