Severe heatwave has swept across most parts of India and temperatures are expected to continue rising in the coming days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Data showed that the temperature in Barmer in Rajasthan state rose to 48 degrees Celsius on May 22 and 48.8 degrees Celsius on May 23, the highest recorded temperature in India this year. The water level in the Yamuna river flowing through Delhi has dropped amid the sweltering heat, affecting water supplies. The city has also seen a record 8,000 megawatts of electricity demand per day as air conditioners, coolers and refrigerators in homes and offices run at full capacity.

Also on May 23, at least 24 places in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh recorded maximum temperatures of 45 degrees Celsius and above. Weather conditions are likely to worsen further as the IMD forecasts temperatures in northwestern India to rise by 3 degrees Celsius to 4 degrees Celsius in the next few days.
