The 10th Vietnam-Australia Strategic Dialogue on Foreign Affairs and Defense

Vietnam and Australia have high strategic trust and share common visions and views on many regional and international issues.

On August 5, in Canberra, Australia, the 10th Strategic Dialogue on Foreign Affairs and Defense (2+2) between Vietnam and Australia took place.

The Vietnamese delegation was co-chaired by Comrade Nguyen Manh Cuong, member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Major General Duong Quy Nam, Director of the Institute of International Defense Relations, Ministry of National Defense .

The Australian delegation was co-chaired by Deputy Foreign Minister Michelle Chan and Deputy Defence Minister Hugh Jeffrey. Officials from the Vietnamese and Australian Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defence attended.

At the Dialogue, the two sides highly appreciated the strong development of the Vietnam-Australia relationship, especially since the upgrade to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in March 2024. The two sides emphasized that Vietnam and Australia have high strategic trust and share common visions and views on many regional and international issues.

In the context of the rapidly changing and complex global and regional situation, Vietnam and Australia agreed to promote the exchange of views and positions and further strengthen cooperation to respond to common challenges, accelerate the implementation of reached agreements, and discuss, seek and develop new cooperation contents.

The two sides affirmed the importance of bilateral relations and highly appreciated the comprehensive and effective development of bilateral cooperation in all six pillars of politics, defense - security, economy - trade, climate change - energy, science - technology and innovation; agreed to continue promoting cooperation in depth to meet the common interests of the two countries.

The two sides agreed that defense and security cooperation is an important pillar in the Vietnam-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Defence cooperation is being implemented comprehensively, including regular dialogue and consultation at all levels, information sharing, training, coaching and capacity building. Vietnam highly appreciates Australia's support in providing language and professional training courses for officers of the Vietnam People's Army, as well as supporting Vietnam to improve its capacity to actively participate in UN peacekeeping operations, especially providing transport aircraft and deploying Vietnamese forces to missions.

The two sides shared their views and assessments of the recent world and regional situation and agreed that, in the face of rapid changes in the situation, Vietnam and Australia need to increase sharing of assessments and forecasts on issues of concern in order to contribute more positively to maintaining peace and stability in the region and the world.

Believing that in the current volatile context, countries need to act responsibly and make cooperative efforts to contribute to maintaining peace, stability and development, the two sides uphold the principles of respecting international law and multilateralism, refraining from using force or threatening to use force, and respecting the legitimate rights and interests of all countries.

The two sides affirmed to attach importance to and promote the central role of ASEAN, strengthen cooperation at ASEAN-led forums, promote cooperation in the Mekong Sub-region as well as on regional issues of mutual concern.
